Chishui Danxia World Natural Heritage Visitor Center is situated on a sloping terrain surrounded by red Danxia stone peaks, nestled between mountains and water. The site unfolds as a series of ascending parallel terraces with a distinct central ridge, and a flat, open area at the base. The architecture features striking red conical volumes standing atop a white plinth, aligned with the slanted axis of the mountain ridge, creating a strong spatial relationship with the horizon and reflecting the unique topography.
The spatial organization follows the layout logic of traditional mountain settlements. The parallel and terraced arrangement of conical forms creates a sense of focus, while the white massing contains enclosed courtyards that echo the stepped bases of local hill dwellings and symbolize the introverted ritualistic nature of traditional white courtyards.
The building is composed of two hierarchical sets of isomorphic units. The first level consists of five red, sawtooth-shaped conical volumes leaning against the mountain, housing office spaces with a visitor center above. The second level is made up of white plinth-like units, connected through courtyards to form a “U”-shaped structure serving the public reception functions of the tourist center. The interlocking configuration of these two layers clearly reflects the influence of local vernacular architecture, characterized by undulating rooflines and stacked foundations.
