This project is located within a park in Chishui City, Guizhou Province, situated slightly west of the northern section of the park’s central axis.
The building is integrated into the Danxia stone hillside, surrounded by traditional gray-tiled houses, with a site elevation difference of over ten meters. Adapting to the terrain, the exhibition hall features a three-tiered terraced courtyard and a circular ramp layout, while preserving old trees and bamboo groves to blend seamlessly with the natural environment. The angled southern design echoes the Danxia stone steps at the cemetery’s main entrance and connects to the northwest vehicle path via an accessible ramp, forming a trapezoidal courtyard arrangement.
Drawing inspiration from local traditional dwellings, the design transforms gray-tiled sloping roofs into a flowing, undulating roofscape. The multi-courtyard layout is well-suited to the region’s humid climate, creating a solemn yet vibrant atmosphere through thoughtful spatial composition. The courtyards preserve two 50-year-old camphor trees, while a central white terrace and a warmly lit atrium enhance the ceremonial ambiance. A narrow northern light court, enclosed by frosted skylights and white colonnades, evokes a pure and sacred atmosphere, while a triangular courtyard in the northwest corner, adorned with an osmanthus tree, adds a refreshing touch.
The building’s transparent façades encourage interaction between indoor and outdoor spaces. The base, constructed from Danxia stone, integrates harmoniously with the natural hillside. With its multi-courtyard layout, the exhibition hall subtly blends into the surroundings, fostering a commemorative atmosphere while utilizing low-cost construction techniques to preserve and evolve the traditions of local architecture.
