Huangpidong Ruin Concrete Memorial Site, located in Chishui, is a renowned tourist destination in southwest China. Visitors ascend a steep bamboo forest path to reach the mountaintop, where a solitary and resilient structure rises against the dramatic valley landscape, creating a striking visual focal point.
The memorial’s spatial composition consists of three layered enclosing spaces and a platform overlooking the valley. A narrow U-shaped ramp diagonally inserts into a sunken cylindrical space, whose semi-enclosed base is coated in vivid red, echoing the vertical presence of the main structure.
All walls and geometric elements are cast-in-place concrete. The subtle scars and marks formed during mold removal are intentionally highlighted to convey the weathered and enduring character of the site. The pathways are paved with locally sourced sand mixed with iron-red pigment concrete, harmonizing with the overall materiality and reinforcing the memorial’s tactile and visual presence.
